My husband works a rotating schedule so he doesn’t always get holidays off. We were lucky this year to be able to spend Labor Day together as a family. We opted to spend our day doing something for a cause and hit the “Cans 4 Kids” event over at the Plan B Burger Bar in Simsbury.
Full disclosure, I worked for Plan B for 6 years in Various locations. It was a wonderful place to work and I did a lot of growing, changing, and learning during my time there. I started in the West Hartford location when there were only three locations total: West Hartford, Simsbury, and Glastonbury. The company has gotten much bigger since those days and now has additional locations in Milford, Fairfield, Stamford, DC, Ashburn, VA, and Springfield.
Plan B serves the best burgers around. All fresh ground in house daily from American, all natural, source verified beef. The freshly ground meat is hand formed into a patty just before it hits the grill to make the juiciest, most delicious burger ever. Also among Plan B’s specialties are beer and bourbon. American craft beers rotate on their 14 tap lines and they have close to 100 bottles and cans to try from as well. The extensive Bourbon collection is served in a variety of ways. My personal favorite being the Bourbon flight- where you choose a few to try and you get a taste of each. Pro tip: Add an ice cube to your Bourbon to take just the right amount of bite out and really open up those charred oak flavors.
Plan B Simsbury is an extra special and unique location because it is an old train station and on the Registry of Historical Places. There is a steam engine and caboose out back! If your child loves trains the way my son does, you may even have some trouble getting inside!
Plan B loves to bring communities together around great food. They also sprinkle in some awesome events to give back to the community. Cans 4 kids is one of them. As a parent, I appreciate all that Connecticut Children’s Medical Center does for the children in our community and I am always on board to support their cause.
The mission for this event is simple: Grab a can, help a kid!
Plan B Simsbury works closely with their vendors to score as many canned beer donations as possible. They are then sold for $4 a can and the profits are donated to CCMC. So far they have raised about $25,000. With the help of her fabulous team, General Manager, Nancy Crandall, also organizes a huge raffle. Tickets sell for $1 each or $25 for an arm’s length.
Recently, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center announced that they are experiencing a shortage of toys for the children in their care. Plan B did not hesitate to add a toy drive to the Cans 4 Kids event. If you couldn’t make the event, but would like to donate a toy, you can check CCMC’s guidelines here: http://connecticutchildrens.org
All in all, it was a fun day. I revisited my childhood by playing skip-it, and my husband found the corn hole boards. It’s a great atmosphere to just “chill” with the family.
If nightlife is more your thing, be sure to stop in to enjoy the bar crowd!
